Authorities Continue Search For Missing Bloomington Man

After combing through tips and trails, there are still more questions than answers for the search and rescue teams.
BLOOMINGTON - Authorities entered the second full day of searching for a missing McLean County man on Wednesday.

After combing through tips and trails, there are still more questions than answers for the search and rescue teams.

Detective Tim Tyler has grown familiar with the McLean County countryside over the past two days. On Tuesday, he was one of 50 search and rescue workers looking for missing 59-year-old Daniel Gaines.

"We don't have any indication of any type of foul play. We're just treating it as a missing person case, and we're trying to find him,” said Tyler.

No one has seen Gaines since he left his home around lunch time on Monday. Family members told rescuers that Gaines often rides his bike between 40 and 50 miles a day, usually alone.

"We have no direction of travel. All we know is that he's an avid bicyclist and he likes to ride his bike,” said Tyler.

Five different search teams spent Tuesday on the ground, trying to find Gaines, but a 1,200 mile search radius, filled with wooded areas, and heavy brush has not made the search easy.

Tyler says if the weather clears up, they'll probably add an aerial element as well.

"We would stop and search areas near the roadways where there was any possibility, if he pulled off the road and stopped. We wanted to be sure that we searched those areas,” said Tyler.

Until then, authorities are working with neighboring counties to see if anyone can help them find Gaines.

Gaines is 6’3”, and about 200 pounds. He was last seen on a silver Mongoose, hybrid style bicycle. Anyone with information is encouraged to call the McLean County Sheriff's Department at 309-888-5019.
