Back to School Shoppers Flood Local Stores

Target in the middle of one of its busiest weekends of the year.
We’re in the middle of one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year, back to school shopping.
Some schools, like District 150 are opening their doors to students this Monday.

When August comes around, big retailers- like Target- get ready for the rush of back to school shoppers.

“Back to school to college time for everybody is about the same time of year,” said Store Team Leader Steve Erdman.

And this year has been no different. Erdman couldn’t share numbers, but he says there year has been one of the busiest Target has seen in a long time.

“We just see an increase in guess traffic across the chain,” he explained. “Notebooks, binders, pencils and pens. Those are the big heavy hitters.”

And one of the items that's really flying off the shelves; bookbags, or more specifically themed bookbags. Those include backpacks with pictures of superheroes on the back.

Because of the rush, employees at Target are logging some serious overtime. Erdman says this weekend rivals those during December.

Sarah Bigger is one of many shoppers searching for the final few items on her back to school list.

She brought her daughter Olivia along to help.

“We try to do it together, uh, you know, so we can see what's out there,” said Sarah Bigger.

“We just go back here and look around,” explained Olivia Bigger, an incoming student at Lindbergh Middle School.

Sarah says prices have gone up since she shopped with her oldest son six years ago.

“His list is very short. Her list is very long. They have changed quite a bit over the years. A lot more high tech things. She has a flash driver on her list this year, which I've never seen before.”

But Olivia doesn’t have gadgets or fancy book bags at the top of her list. She’s keeping things simple.

“Mostly crayons and colored pencils.”

Target says to keep up with the demand, they hire seasonal employees.

They are open until 9 P.M. on Sunday for parents looking for any last minute items.
