PEORIA - The Better Business Bureau is warning Central Illinois to be aware of scams in the aftermath of recent storms.

They say to beware of storm chasers and out-of-town contractors soliciting business.

"It is uncommon for out-of-town storm chasers to solicit business after storms like the ones we had today," said Bonnie Bakin, President of the Better Business Bureau. "Storm Chasers may not have proper licensure for your area and may offer quick fixes or make big promises to which they won't deliver."

They offer the following tips for storm victims:
  • Start with trust. Make sure the the business has credibility.
  • Find out if the company is registered with the State of Illinois.  You can call 800-732-8866 or go online to revenue.state.il.us.
  • Do not pay for a job in advance.
  • Resist high-pressure tactics.
  • Check that the contractor's vehicle has signs or markings on it with the busisness name, phone number, and license plates for your state.
  • Try to get multiple quotes from contractors.
