Blood Drive Organizers Seek Equality in Giving

Organizers from the National Gay Blood Drive partnered with the American Red Cross Friday to help raise awareness of a policy that does not allow gay men to donate blood.
BLOOMINGTON - A national group is working to end what it calls an inequality in blood donations.

Organizers from the National Gay Blood Drive partnered with the American Red Cross Friday to help raise awareness of a policy that does not allow gay men to donate blood.

Anyone who could give blood was asked to bring someone who couldn't to show the FDA that its long-standing policy should be changed to reach more people.

"Our goal is that this is our last one, that we get the signatures we need, that we get the outcome that we need, and we won't need one next year. But even if we do, we're really prepared to have it again. Same place, better turnout,” said coordinator Raven Davidson.

Organizers say they'll need about 20,000 signatures to get the FDA's attention.
