Bloomington Weighing Soccer Complex Proposal

Bloomington's city council is weighing the likelihood of a proposed multi-million dollar recreational project.
BLOOMINGTON - Bloomington's city council is weighing the likelihood of a proposed multi-million dollar recreational project.

Local leaders have been working for months, to find a place to relocate the city's soccer fields. The fields are currently near the airport, but the FAA needs that property.

One plan could shift the fields to a soccer complex near Wylie drive. In both Bloomington and Normal, the sales tax would rise a quarter percent to help pay for the $32 million project.

City leaders say it'll likely be an uphill battle, with several other big infrastructure needs and a 1 percent county wide sales tax also potentially altering future spending.

"It's a very difficult time, I think, for our elected officials to support a further increase in the home rule sales tax for this particular project,” said David Hales, city manager for Bloomington.

Hales says developers may have to consider some other sites for the complex, and think about options like leasing it. He says it would also help if the developers raise some of the money on their own.

Project discussions are ongoing. A work session about the project scheduled for Monday night was canceled because of weather.
