PEKIN - Two men were killed today while on the job at a Pekin liquid feed manufacturer.
Police say they were cleaning train cars parked at the plant on South Second Street a little after noon. One man fell in and was then overcome by the fumes in the train car.
That’s when another worker jumped in and tried to save him. Both of the men died.
A third worker saw what happened and called the police.
“It is just a tragic scenario, one that happens from time to time. We have not seen this too much in our area, but it’s obviously, something that our hearts go out to the families of the people that are involved in this,” Detective Mike Eeten of the Pekin Police said.
Investigators believe carbon monoxide poisoning was to blame.
Fire and rescue officials say the levels were very high and deadly at the time, but the exact causes of their deaths are still under investigation.
The identities of the two workers have yet to be released.
