Brothers Make Special Snowy Winter Rescue

COLFAX - As Becky Godbey and Gale Wheatley sit in this hospital room, they've never been more thankful to see their mom, Mary Iler.
COLFAX - As Becky Godbey and Gale Wheatley sit in this hospital room, they've never been more thankful to see their mom, Mary Iler.

"I think she had a guardian angel, I really do," said Godbey.

On Friday morning, Iler was outside, preparing for the winter storm.

"I was cleaning off the ramp, so I could get into the house and down I went," said Iler.

After being stuck in the snow for more than 30 minutes, she heard her neighbors return from a half day at school.

"Then we heard a faint call and we're like, 'what was that?'" recalls Austin Chase.

Chase and his brother Payton Eades waded through deep drifts of snow.

"We walked up to the house and we knocked on the doors and we didn't hear anything. We wondered, are we just hearing things?"

"How am I going to get out of this snow? I was so cold. My hands were so cold, and all I can say is I'm glad to see those boys," said Iler.

"She was face down in the snow and the snow was covering her," said Chase.

"I was like, we need to hurry up and help her because we don't know how long she's been out here, or what's going to happen," said Eades.

"I just asked them to help get me in the house. You're not going to hurt me," said Iler.

The boys called their mom and brought Iler inside to warm up, while they waited for an ambulance.

"I was a human snowball. The storms were going full force," said Iler.

Iler was taken to Advocate BroMenn. With frostbitten fingers and a blood-clotted leg that required surgery, she's on a long road to recovery. But thanks to the brothers, she's alive.

"I just don't know how we'll ever thank them. I don't. They saved her life. I don't know how we'll ever thank them," said Godbey.

These brothers don't consider themselves to be heroes. They were just doing the right thing.

"Just helping someone who needs it," said Chase.

Iler has been in the hospital since Friday, but she's already doing some light physical therapy. Her daughters are hoping she can get out of the hospital soon and get back to living independently.
