Bustos Co-Sponsors New Sexual Assault Legislation

Bustos Co-Sponsors New Sexual Assault Legislation

The congresswoman wants to increase communication between police and universities.
Congresswoman Cheri Bustos (D-17) is working on a federal bill to address sexual assaults on college campuses.

It's still in the early stages.

But Bustos is co-sponsoring the bill with several other Democrats and Republicans.

The legislation would require a confidential survey conducted yearly along with communication between law enforcement and universities.

"Our bill takes a look at making sure that there's memorandum of agreement with local law enforcement so they're not just handled at a college level or for instance, by an athletic department when there's a sexual assault,” Bustos said.

Bustos says she conducted an unofficial survey of women in her office and found that almost every single one knew someone who was sexually assaulted. That was part of her inspiration to co-sponsor the bill.
