WMBD/WYZZ-TV - PEORIA, Ill. - Summer is Cloe Churchill's favorite time of the year.
Just about everyday she plays one of her two favorite sports, softball or basketball. The Canton junior has played hoops in Chicago, Kansas City and Cincinnati with her Springfield Predators AAU team in the past few weeks.
"I like traveling everywhere to go play," said Churchill. "Playing new teams that we haven't played before. I've been to a lot of places I've never been before, that's always fun."
And in the summer, she gets the opportunity to coach young girls at the Curley "Boo" Johnson "Skills For Life" camp.
"I really love the game and love watching people play and seeing how people progress where they play," said Churchill.
The 9-to-11 year-old girls Churchill is coaching this week are getting instruction on shooting, passing and dribbling. And in her group, they may even get some instruction on Japanese.
"My nana is full-blood Japanese. She came to the U.S. when she was younger," said Churchill. "So she's been teaching me how to count."
Churchill, who can count to 20 in Japanese, began speaking a little bit of the language in eighth grade. One day she hopes her basketball travels take her to her grandmother's native land.
"I would love to go to Japan," said Churchill. "That's one thing I want to do. I've been telling my mom about it."
