Changes Coming for Main & University Intersection

PEORIA - The city of Peoria has a two-point-six million dollar plan to improve pedestrian crossing and traffic at University and Main. A meeting Wednesday night at Bradley University laid out the details.  University street would narrow to 3 lanes at Columbia Terrace and continue on MacArthur Highway to Jefferson Avenue in the Warehouse District.  Speed tables, illuminated signs, and pavers in the crosswalk will be used to increase pedestrian visibility. Residents worry about closing the intersection for weeks, but city officials say that isn't the hard part.
"Closing the intersection is actually an easy thing to do," said Peoria City Engineer Scott Reeise. "It's training folks on where to go once that intersection is closed. So its folks that want to go south, utilizing Nebraska, Park, Farmington Road, back up to Main."
Officials hope to start construction in Feburary and end in May, just before Bradley graduation. All meeting information is available on the City of Peoria's website.
