PEKIN - One week after a devastating typhoon hit the Philippines, much needed support has arrived, but leaders say more help is needed for the country to rebuild.
That’s why two local groups are joining forces to provide extra assistance to storm victims with a dance benefit.
The Filipino-American Society of Central Illinois and Comfort Plus Hospice held a dance fundraiser Saturday night.
Many people attended giving a cash donation at the door.
The event featured music, dancing, and raffles, plus drinks and hors d'oeuvres.
Organizer Reginald Gress says proceeds collected will go to the American Red Cross to further its efforts in the Philippines.
"Whenever there is a tragedy anywhere within the community that deals with one family that is Filipino-American, then is includes everybody and we all come together to support that one family."
Organizers say the money is greatly needed, as countless families are without vital resources like food and water.
Volunteers are considering future events to collect clothing and canned food.
