Day 2 of Barney Murder Trial: Firefighters Recount Inferno at Apartment

PEORIA – The murder trial for Aunterrio Barney moved forward Thursday.

It was the second day of the trial which began four years after the alleged crime that killed four people.

Firefighters were called to the witness stand Thursday. They testified about the deadly scene they arrived to back on April 20, 2010.

Investigators believe that Barney torched Youlandice Simmons’, his ex-girlfriend, apartment, around 4:30a.m. that morning.

He faces multiple murder and arson charges.

Thursday morning witness William Hanks of the Peoria Fire Department described smoke billowing out of the apartment at 1212 N. University Street when he responded there.

On Thursday, some family members in the courtroom had a difficult time fighting back tears. Some exited as Hanks described his crew’s rescue efforts.

“I proceeded to enter through the room and upon entering I immediately went down to the floor and discovered one of the victims right off the bat,” Hanks testified. “After I had gotten the teenaged victim male out of the room I then assisted Captain Olehy in trying to get the victim out the window.”

The trial is expected to end Friday, but may go until Monday.

Aunterrio Barney is expected to take the witness stand.
