WMBD/WYZZ-TV - BARTONVILLE, Ill. - Long gold locks stuffed under a fresh Rockets cap.
Trey Barnes wasn't ready to chop the mop.
"Our rule, or Coach Renz's rule is the hair has to be above the ears and above the eyes," said Barnes.
Barnes is a senior on the Limestone High School baseball team.
"The kids all wanted him to keep it as well," said head coach Derek Renz. "Jokingly made a petition about saving the flow."
Barnes even styled his mane to technically follow the letter of the law.
"So my lawyers skills said, 'OK, my hair is above my eyes and above the ears," said Barnes
And what started out as a team rule between player and coach quickly morphed into a challege to help St. Jude Children's Hospital.
"I said if he raised 500, I would let him keep his flow," said Renz. "He exceeed that. Raised $710 by himself, and presented a check for $750 to St. Jude."
During a baseball trip to Tennessee, Barnes and the Rockets let their hair down and visited the children's hospital. Bringing fun and frizz.
"Wasn't just about me or my hair. Great I get to keep it, but its about the kids," said Barnes. " Amazing to see the school and community come together and do something amazing."
And to think it all started with just a few curls.
