Extra Effort: Normal Community's Prus Proving Worth from Bench

Alex Prus is this week's 'Extra Effort' winner

WMBD/WYZZ-TV - NORMAL, Ill. Alex Prus has some advice for fellow high school athletes.

"Find a role on your team, embrace it and have fun with it," said Prus.

Prus is having a blast with his Normal Community High School teammates, who are one win away from a sectional title. And he's having a blast without having a lot of playing time.

"I'm not gifted with athletic ability but with words, encouragement and smarts," said Prus. "And I use that to my advantage. Just come to practice and work my butt off to make the other guys better."

Normal Community plays Edwardsville in Friday's Class 4A sectional final in East Moline.

"He doesn't play very much but it's like having another coach on the team," said NCHS coach Dave Witzig. "He's an encourager, extremely hard worker in practice and when you have a guy like that, it really helps your team."

He's the student council president and a helped Twin City students gather some 6,000 pounds of food for a local food bank this fall. He'd love to cap off his basketball career in Peoria at state next week but he hopes he's really remembered for more than being a guy at the end of the Ironmen bench.

"I hope people won't just remember my name but remember what I stood for," said Prus. "And that I left something worth imitating. That people wasnt to try and be a leader, encourager and have a role player on their teams. Hopefully, that's the legacy I leave at NCHS."
