Fire Destroys Toulon Grocery Store

TOULON - Super Valu was the town's only grocery store.
TOULON: A Toulon icon is reduced to rubble, as a fire destroys the Super Valu Grocery Store.

"It just breaks your heart," building co-owner Doug Parrott said

Fire crews got the call around three o' clock, some and flames were coming out of the basement of the Super Valu.

Toulon Fire Chief Andy Colgan said, "We made an initial attack, interior attack, and quickly pulled out. We went defensive as long as we could."

But the grocery store the town has fought to save numerous times could not be saved Friday.

Parrott said, "We've worked very hard, as a community, to keep this place, and to see it go up in flames is, literally, it breaks your heart."

Toulon Mayopr Larry Hollis said, "That's one of the things we've been fighting to keep in town, so it is a valuable part of the community.

There is no where else to go in Toulon. Super Valu was their only grocery store.

Toulon resident Bertling said, "I consider the people that work there my friends. It is going to be a very huge, considerable loss to our town. It's so much better than hipping in the car and waste gas to go to a larger town."

Which is what Toulon residents will have to do. The nearest store is around six miles away, in neighboring Wyoming. And as the community watches, as the fire takes the building, they know that this isn't going to be the end of grocery stores in Toulon.

Hollis said, "Yeah, it is a real blow to the town, to lose a grocery store. Hopefully we can come up with something to replace it."

Parrott added, "We're resilient out here. If there is any way we can rebuild, you know we are insured."

Fire crews are still investigating the cause of the fire.
