Former State Representative Mike Smith of Canton Dies

The former 91st District of Illinois Representative passes away.
CENTRAL ILLINOIS - Former Illinois Democratic Representative Mike Smith has passed away at the age of 48.

The Canton native and Bradley University alum served in the 91st District from 1995 to 2010.

Governor Pat Quinn later appointed Smith to the Educational Labor Relations Board.

Smith’s colleagues are speaking out about the sudden passing.

State Representative Jehan Gordon-Booth (D-92) of Peoria says, “I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Mike Smith. He was not only a colleague, but a dear friend.” She went on to say, “Mike was a tireless advocate for a high quality public education system for public education system for all children.” And says he was also one of the kindest people she's ever met.

Current 91st District Republican Representative Mike Unes adds of his predecessor, "I was very saddened to hear of the passing of Representative Mike Smith.  My sincere prayers and the prayers of our region are with his family and friends. I always found mike to be a kind, caring man who cared deeply about public service.  His service to our region will not be forgotten.  He will be missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him."

The visitation is planned for Wednesday, August 13 from 4-7pm.

The funeral is planned for the following day, Thursday, August 14 at 10 am.

Both will take place at Oak-Hines Funeral Home in Canton.
