Corporal Jared Kumer knew he wanted to enlist early on.
So he signed up for the delayed entry program his senior year at East Peoria Community High School, trading the Elite Colt's Drum and Bugle Corps for the Marine Corp.
It was then off to San Diego where he completed basic training as a private first class and expert rifleman on December 3, 2010 - The same day his nephew was born.
In 2011, Jared went on to train in logistics vehicle systems in Missouri.
By June, he was stationed in North Carolina.
Jared's first deployment to Afghanistan lasted seven months in 2012.
He is currently on his second deployment, scheduled to return stateside in August.
When he's not working, his family says he loves to do just about anything outdoors.
