IDOT Contract Worker Hurt in I 74 Accident (UPDATE)

IDOT Contract Worker Hurt (UPDATE)

A morning accident involving a semi and an IDOT contract worker sent the worker to the hospital with non life threatening injuries. According to state police, 57 year old Richard Gustafson of Washington was taken to OSF St. Francis Medical Center and was listed late Tuesday in fair condition. State police say the driver of the semi, which was loaded with organic fertilizer, was headed westbound on I 74 near the Pinecrest exit when the accident happened. Authorities say Gustafson was setting up traffic signs for upcoming construction when an item blew into traffic. He ran into the roadway to retrieve it when the semi hit him and then the semi rolled over onto its passenger side and a small amount of fertilizer leaked out. That cause the roadway to be shut down for hours to clean up the wreckage. Gustafson was ticketed for improper walking on the road.
