BLOOMINGTON - Two major arteries in the Twin Cities daily commute could soon be repaved.

The Illinois Department of Transportation awarded $1.1 billion for repair work across the state. A major component is in Bloomington, where nearly $7 million will go toward paving about three miles of Veterans Parkway and two miles of Empire Road.

The city is working on ten million dollars worth of its own repairs, and local leaders say this work is needed.

"There's a lot of potholes, a lot of needs that are out there, that Bloomington often gets the call for, but they're state routes,” explained Bloomington public works director Jim Karch. “So, really it's good for all of our citizens."

Karch says the work could start later this year, but says it's more likely to start up some time in 2015.
