IWU Looks to Expand Shirk Center

The university is looking to expand its athletic center by 73 feet.
BLOOMINGTON- Illinois Wesleyan University is looking to expand its campus.

The university is planning to expand the Shirk Center by adding an additional two-level building on its east side.

The center opened in 1994 and since then the student athlete population has more than doubled.

The expansion would include a new fitness center, five new locker rooms, and a new athletic training facility.

The IWU Athletic Director says the university has simply outgrown the facility and the addition will help accommodate the overflow.

"The school has grown. The Athletic Department has grown. It has served us really well. It's just that we don't have locker rooms for our teams now. We have twice as many athletes. We need more room for our athletic training staff," said Dennie Bridges,IWU Athletic Director.

The university is currently seeking bids for construction.

IWU hopes to break ground on the expansion in September.
