January unemployment rates fell in 11 of 12 metro areas in Illinois according to data released Thursday by the Illinois Department of Employment Security. Bloomington Normal's unemployment dropped slightly from 7.8 percent last January to 7.7 percent this year. However, the Twin Cities also had one of the largest job losses in the state 2400 while Peoria lost 3400 jobs primarily due to a temporary slowdown in global manufacturing demand. Peoria's unemployment rate dropped from 10.1 percent last January to 9.8 percent this January, way above the national average.
