South Williamsport, PA (Sports Network) - Takuma Gomi snapped a sixth-inning tie with a leadoff homer, lifting Japan to a 3-2 victory over Mexico for the Little League World Series international championship.
Shunpei Takagi had two hits and knocked in a run for Japan, which will face the winner of the United States title game between Chula Vista, Calif. and Westport, Conn. for the Little League World Series championship on Sunday.
Ramon Mendoza belted a two-run homer for Mexico, which had a golden chance to take the lead in the fifth inning.
A leadoff double by Brandon Montes and an error put runners on the corners with no outs. After a strikeout, Saul Favela lifted a fly ball to deep center field. Montes, however, held at third and Brandon Meza struck out to keep the game tied.
Gomi then belted a 1-2 pitch from Jorge Romero over the wall in right field to start the sixth, giving Japan a 3-2 lead.
Kazuki Ishida pitched around a leadoff single in the bottom of the sixth to close it for Japan. Keita Saito worked one hitless inning to earn the win.
