Kelly Picking Off Runners After Picking Yadier's Brain

Carson Kelly making successful move to catcher

WMBD/WYZZ-TV - PEORIA, Ill. - The most popular jersey worn at Dozer Park this year is Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina.

Chiefs backstop Carson Kelly knows why. Especially since he learned from the six-time gold-glove winner this spring training.

"I was his shadow," explained Kelly. "Actually I was in his back pocket the whole time. Just to continue to keep learning. My notepad has pages and pages from stuff that I've talked to him about and watched him. Truly special."

And Kelly says he has the best mentor in the majors.

"He told me he wants to be the best," Kelly said of Molina. "Coming from the best in a sense. That's huge."

Chiefs manager Joe Kruzel agrees.

"He's really taking on this challege, so to speak and really become pretty good at it in a short period of time," said Kruzel. "I'm excited for him and for Cardinal organization to see him advance at that position."

Because of an abundance of infielders in the Cardinals organization, Kelly made the change. And it turns out it better suits his playing style.

"It's definitely different. You feel locked in every single pitch," said Kelly. "My personality, that's how I like to play the game. Like to be locked in every single pitch and be in every single play. Being able to be as consistant as possible is the name of the game. Focus on this year, becoming best catcher I can be."

And someday, fans at Dozer Park could be wearing Cardinals jerseys with his last name on the back.
