Local leaders hosted the meeting in Normal to discuss the project.
The site is directly over the Mahomet Aquifer, which provides drinking water to 13 Illinois counties including the cities of Normal and Champaign.
Communities and residents say they are worried that if the proposed landfill leaks, it could contaminate their drinking water.
Steve Carter, a meeting organizer says their goal at this point is just to educate the public.
“People say that doesn't make any sense. Our thinking is if we get enough people involved in contacting their political leaders, this common sense will eventually prevail.”
The group is planning to hold similar meeting in Decatur and Champaign.
