Local High School Artist to have Work Displayed in Washington D.C.

PEORIA - One local high school student never thought her work would be displayed for millions who visit Capitol Hill.

Now, she has that chance.

Rebecca Zilkowski from Peoria Notre Dame won the 33rd annual Congressional Art Show and competition put on by U.S. Representative Aaron Schock.

Each year, a high school artist from every congressional district gets to put a piece of artwork on display at the Capitol.

Representative Schock has turned it in to a contest to see who will represent Central Illinois.

"It's a great way to highlight the talent of these young men and women throughout the district," he said. It's a reminder of why art is important as a piece of a well-rounded education."

With schools facing major cuts in arts programs, the Congressional Art Competition is used to promote education in the field.
