PEORIA - Unrest in the Middle East continued to spike Thursday night, but many local residents and leaders gathered to show support for Israel.

The Consul General of Israel to the Midwest, Roey Gilad, joined others in Peoria at an event called “Evening of Solidarity with Israel.”

Gilad visited areas all over the Midwest and rallied with those communities while tensions continue to rise.

He said even though Israel is 6,000 miles East, they can use any support from our country.

Thursday at midnight, a temporary cease-fire agreement expires between Israel and Hamas, but already around 9 p.m., mortars had been fired by Hamas into Israel.

“If they are going to fulfill the threat [or] implement of threat this will be a complete mess. I think if that will happen, all hell will break loose,” said Gilad.

“I would like to think that they are only threatening, but when you are playing with such players who don't respect international norms I don't know what to expect.”

The Consul General praises the support being received from the U.S.

He said this is an issue any democracy could face and that’s why the u-s should not turn a cold shoulder to the issue.
