McLean Co. Sales Tax Advocates Make Their Case

BLOOMINGTON - Voters in McLean County learned about the positives of a proposed 1 percent sales tax.
BLOOMINGTON - Voters in McLean County learned about the positives of a proposed 1 percent sales tax.

One advocacy group gave a simple message, "one cent makes sense.”They say an additional 1 percent sales tax will help the schools at a time when they're getting limited help from the state, without raising property taxes.

The tax would go toward upgrading facilities and paying off maintenance debts. Panelists also cited the need to keep children safe and secure, and the benefits of a better learning environment.

"The pride that my students display when they come into the building and they see the new student center, when they see our new library, again I can't quantify it, but it has an immediate impact in the school environment,” said Richard Baldwin, high school teacher for Bloomington High School.

The new sales tax is estimated to bring in about $16 million annually for 13 public school districts across McLean County.

Officials estimate about a third of that revenue would come from "out of town" traffic. The primary election is March 18.
