McLean County Closer to Same Sex Marriage Licenses

BLOOMINGTON - By next week, McLean County could be offering marriage licenses to same sex couples.
BLOOMINGTON - By next week, McLean County could be offering marriage licenses to same sex couples.

A federal ruling last week allowed Cook County to start issuing those licenses immediately. Champaign County announced Wednesday that it would follow suit.

After consulting with the county attorney's office, McLean County has given the okay to allow for marriages in the state's largest county. County officials say there's already a demand to change civil unions to marriages.

"So, they're saying, we still want to be first and second in line. So, we've had those calls to assure them that we'll position them for their appointments, so that they can get their marriage licenses,” said Kathy Michael, McLean County clerk.

Under Illinois law, the statewide starting date is slated to be June 1. Michael says many other counties are still consulting with their county attorneys offices before they'll make a final decision.
