A mixed local unemployment report released Thursday by the Illinois Department of Employment Security. According to data released, Peoria's unemployment rate dropped slightly from a year ago from 8.9 to 8.8 percent while Bloomington Normal's jobless rate went up from 6.9 percent last year to 7.1 percent this year. Overall, the Twin Cities lost about 1800 jobs from last March to this March while Peoria area lost 2300 jobs in that same period. The unemployment rate identifies those who are out of work and looking for work and is not tied to collecting unemployment insurance benefits. The state claims much of the loss of jobs reflects a slowdown in global manufacturing.
