More Tourists Visiting Illinois Than Ever Before

The Illinois Office of Tourism visits Peoria to discuss visitors numbers.

PEORIA - Illinois is boasting a record breaking number of tourists last year: 106 million visitors to be exact.

And travelers have spent more than $600 million here in central Illinois.

The Illinois Office of Tourism has used a new mix of marketing strategies to get more people to visit the state.

They have increased their social media use, redesigned the state's website, and introduced mini-Abe in commercials.

"People are clicking on that content, and they're viewing it from beginning to end. So, we are exploring Illinois in a different way and hoping the people come with us," Illinois Office of Tourism Director Jen Hoelzle said.

The office of tourism pointed out Wildlife Prairie Park as one of the gems of the state. It saw an eight percent increase in traffic last year. Park officials say it is one of the only places where visitors can feed bison.
