Mother's Day in Central Illinois

Area residents sound off on their matriarch love

PEORIA - The second Sunday in May is their celebration. People everywhere get to celebrate mom. Even though she goes by many names (mum, momma, mumsy, mother), she is loved all the same.

"To let her know she's appreciated with everything she does. She takes care of everything while I’m at work” explains Matthew Boyd.

The Floral Department at Hyvee is at full staff making arrangements for the family matriarch.

"This is the second busiest holiday for our floral shop" says Floral Manager Julie Harms.

Somewhere between two and three thousand flower arrangements will pass though this shop today… Harms explains.

"Everybody has a mom and everybody wants to treat their mom and make them feel special today. Flowers are an easy way to do that. All moms, all girls like flowers."

Cards are also a big seller. Lesli Jett decided her mom warrants both.

"Cause it's my mom. She deserves it. She's done a lot for me. I need to go do something for her today. I am making her a delicious yummy dinner."

While there was no shortage of people wanting to tell us why their mom is the best, Brock Wileman summed it up best.

"I cleaned, worked in the yard, mostly because it's stuff she usually does and she deserved a break from it. Happy mother's day mom!”

There is a lot of love for mothers out there. Americans spend more than $2.6 billion on flowers every Mother's Day. Dads on the other hand may be getting the short end of the stick. According to the National Retail Federation, the average American household spends $50 more on Mother's Day than Father's Day.
