New Trolley Tour Shows Peoria's Distillery and Brewing History

Learn why Peoria was the "whiskey capital of the world" during the late 1800s.

PEORIA - A new trolley tour is exploring the rich history of distilleries and breweries in Peoria.

The “Roll Out the Barrel Tour” made its maiden expedition today. It’s put on by the Peoria Historical Society and runs every Sunday from July until August.

The tour explores parts of Peoria- which as one guide told us- made it the “whiskey capital of the world” during the late 1800s.

One reason is the surrounding area produces so much grain.

"See some of the sights of the breweries and distilleries that existed in Peoria. We are going to go down in kind of the hinterland between Washington St. and the river,” said tour guide John Leyland.

The trolley departs at Kelleher’s Irish Pub at 1 P.M.
