Engineer Nick Whitfield, Jr. passed away on Tuesday at the age of 48.

For the last 18 years, Whitfield was the driver of engine number ten at Fire Station Two. Before that, he served in the Air National Guard.

Chief Mick Humer said Whitfield left after his shift on Monday and seemed to be fine. Whitfield also worked as a fire investigator, and crew members say he'll be missed.

"He was just a great guy to be around, you know. A good friend, great employee, those kinds of things. It's just a, and I know keep using the word 'stunning' but it really is stunning,” said Humer.

Funeral arrangements are still being finalized. Preliminary autopsies indicate Whitfield had significant cardiac disease.

Firefighter Jeff Hilton passed away last Aug. 21.
