NORMAL - The Constitution Trail will soon be a little bit longer.

Normal’s town council approved a plan Monday that will put an additional half mile stretch onto the trail near Hudson.

The extension will use property the town acquired years ago that is outside of city limits.

Right now, the trail ends at Kerrick Road, but starting in July, crews will begin adding an asphalt surface by the site of the old railroad tracks.

"We don't have to go in and put a lot of our gravel. There's no major grating to be done,” explained city manager Mark Peterson. “That's all taken care of. So, basically, it's just some tree removal. There's some old trees that have grown up, but most of it is just laying fresh asphalt on that base for half a mile.”

The project will cost about $125,000 to complete.
