Organization Petitions to Change Legislative Maps

"I've had it. You know things are not good in our state government ."
PEORIA - Peoria's League of Women Voters is taking steps to re-draw the state's legislative maps.

League representatives gathered signatures at Apple’s Bakery Saturday in a partnership with a larger group called "Yes! For Independent Maps." The goal is to collect 300,000 signatures to help end gerrymandering. That's when politicians try to gain a political advantage by drawing maps to include supportive voters. Organizers hope to gain enough support to change how legislatives maps are created.

"I've had it. You know things are not good in our state government and as an individual citizen you wonder, what can I do? This is one thing you can do. We can stop gerrymandering and put the voters back in charge with this petition drive," said League of Women Voters Member Pat Landes.

The league will be collecting signatures on a few more dates coming up:

·  November 19th
Pekin Library 4:00 p.m.
Alpha Park Library 6:00 p.m.
·  November 20th
Lakeview Library 2:00 p.m.
