If you thought you were following Peoria’s Mayor Ardis on Twitter, you might want to check your account.
That’s because police are trying to get to the bottom of a fake account on the popular media site.
Someone created a profile using a picture of the mayor.
Police say it looked real and claim its false impersonation of a public official is a class A misdemeanor that could mean fines and jail time.
The account is suspended, but authorities claim some of the more recent tweets were offensive.
Police were able to trace the IP address from the account to a house on north University Street.
Tuesday night they searched the home now the department is waiting to run forensics to prove the account came from a computer there.
Five people were taken in for questioning; one resident was arrested for an unrelated drug charge.
