Pekin Receives Bids for Veterans Drive South Project

The city of Pekin is moving forward with the next stretch of Veterans Drive.
PEKIN - The city of Pekin is moving forward with the next stretch of Veterans Drive.

City engineers estimated that building the south leg of the road would cost just over $20-million. Three out of the four bids came in lower than that figure. The city can now present construction plans to council on September 9th. The problem is the money for Court Street repairs comes out of the same $30-million grant.

"The court project is still two years away so you know, with the escalation and everything there will be a little less money to do court but we still have the money and we'll take care of court street when the time comes," said city manager, Joe Wuellner.

There will be about $10 million left for Court Street repairs. That project was originally estimated to cost that much, but Wuellner fears the cost of construction could go up in the next two years.
