PHA Finding Alternate Plan for Taft Homes Project

The Peoria Housing Authority learned that its funding source for a project is no longer available.
The Peoria Housing Authority has learned that some funding it planned to use is no longer available.

PHA has been discussing ways to convert Taft Homes into section eight housing. Doing that would allow them a way to secure funding for the next 20 years through a federal program.

However, CEO Brenda Coates said that’s no longer an option. There is a wait list for the program and many housing authorities are competing for the money.

She said PHA was relying on the program, but their overall goal is still the same.

"To disperse poverty, We want to break up the 216 families, certainly being sensitive and keeping some of them together, but we want to get them into other areas where there's more opportunity," said CEO, Brenda Coates.

Coates said the first step for the PHA is to hire a co-developer.

Proposals to the PHA are being presented to the board by February 19.
