PHA Officials Expect Different Feel at Taft Homes Meeting

PEORIA - The Peoria Housing Authority says an emotion-filled meeting Wednesday night was a productive one, and the result was not a surprise.
PEORIA - The Peoria Housing Authority says an emotion-filled meeting Wednesday night was a productive one, and the result was not a surprise.

PHA wants to redevelop Taft Homes into several smaller sites. Residents voiced their concern over a possible move near the Westlake Shopping Center, noting crime and diminished property values.

Wednesday’s meeting was frequently interrupted by residents, but officials hope a few minor changes will keep the meeting a bit calmer.
"One thing I hope is that this location is close to Taft Homes for some of our residents that want to stay in that area. I certainly hope that'll be a plus," said Brenda Coates, CEO for the Peoria Housing Authority.

That second meeting will start at 5:30 p.m. at the Gateway Building downtown. PHA officials say they'll continue to evaluate other sites for Taft Homes in the near future.
