A week after a devastating NBC News poll which showed President Obama losing the confidence of the American people, a new CBS News/New York Times poll has even worse news. The president's approval has dropped 9 points in this poll and like the NBC poll, is hovering near 40 percent with 54 percent disapproving of his performance. Meantime, Obama's foreign policy disapproval has skyrocketed with a record high 58 percent disapproving of his handling of overseas matters. Regarding his handling of Iraq, only 37 percent approve. On the larger question of whether his policies have made the country more or less safe, 36 percent believe we are less safe while 31 percent believe his policies have had no effect. On his handling of the economy, Obama remains in trouble with only 41 percent approve while 54 percent disapprove. Meantime, a new Fox News poll also shows Americans giving the president a record low approval rating on foreign policy. Just 32 percent approve of the job he's doing. The poll shows a majority of voters describe his leadership as disengaged and almost all continue to believe the nation's reputation is declining. 80 percent think America is losing some of its standing in the world, including a sizable 69 percent of Democrats. However, while most voters believe a large number of combat troops will go back into Iraq, 58 percent believe it's more important to keep forces out of Iraq than to keep terrorists from taking over the country. More voters now say the Obama administration is not as serious about fighting terrorism as the Bush administration was. Obama's overall job performance in this poll remain underwater like the NBC poll with 41 percent approval and 54 disapproval.
