Rock Island Trail Officially Connected at Knoxville

The new bridge over Knoxville Ave. ready for runners, walkers and bikers.
PEORIA - The Rock Island Trail’s bridge over Knoxville Ave. in Peoria is now open. People of all ages got to participate in the celebration today.

The Peoria Park District’s 13 mile stretch is almost completely uninterrupted by traffic, thanks to the new bridge.

It goes from the Bob Michel Bridge to Alta Road.

Once you get to Alta Road, the state trail can take you all the way to Toulon.

It was a four year process to get the bridge constructed. “It’s a magnificent facility. It’s a magnificent bridge because it really, it looks like a railroad bridge, and it represents the theme of the Rock Island Trail,” former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood said.

The park district received a grant to construct the bridge back in 2012. The grant was nearly four million dollars.
