Second Annual Household Hazardous Waste Drive Welcomes Big Turnout

BLOOMINGTON - A household hazardous waste collection drive is back in McLean County for its second straight year.
BLOOMINGTON - A household hazardous waste collection drive is back in McLean County for its second straight year.

More than 1,000 people took advantage of Saturday’s free event.

The collection drive is put on by the Ecology Action Center with funding from the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency.

From eight am till three people dropped off their unwanted materials at Mitsubishi Motorway in Bloomington.

Organizers say proper disposal of household hazardous waste is crucial to protect local water supplies.

Items accepted included oil based paints, household batteries, insecticides, and used motor oil.

The Ecology Action Center says it’s pleased with Saturday’s turnout, but the event did not break last year's totals.

In 2012 an unprecedented 1,950 vehicles came through to drop off items.

Organizers say the last household hazardous waste drive had been five years before, which likely made the demand even greater.

If you couldn't make it to the free event, log onto http://ecologyactioncenter.org for suggestions on where to take unwanted items.
