Tech Scam Sweeping Central Illinois

BLOOMINGTON - The Better Business Bureau is warning Central Illinois residents about a tech support scam.

Sharon Guhlstorf is one of hundreds in the area who's received calls from men claiming to be tech support. On Friday, she got a call from a Louisiana-based number, saying they needed to get inside her computer.

She went to a website, and allowed the scammers to remotely access her computer. Her documents were wiped clean, and she was asked to pay $180 to get it fixed.

When Guhlstorf said she couldn't pay, she says the scammers argued with and then hung up.

"And what frustrated me the most is when you get these calls, you always have the option to say no. They wouldn't take no for an answer. They just destroyed my computer,” said Guhlstorf.

The BBB warns not to pay for anything like this over the phone. Scam artists will say there are more problems, to get you to pay them more money.

If your computer gets compromised, you should seek help from professionals like the Geek Squad at Best Buy.
