Wirtz Beverage Distribution Center Opens in Lexington

LEXINGTON - After months of debate, Wirtz Beverage Depot picked Lexington to build its new distribution center.
LEXINGTON - After months of debate, Wirtz Beverage Depot picked Lexington to build its new distribution center.

Friday afternoon, residents got a chance to go inside the $8 million facility. John Mohr is already calling it one of his biggest successes as mayor. Lexington beat out several larger cities, including Bloomington, for the right to build this beverage distribution center.

"This is really special because it shows that people have confidence for private investment in our community,” said Mohr.

Mohr says this new $8 million facility is inspiring others to build. “Those investors saw this business as providing jobs for people that may want to locate here," he added.

The new Wirtz Distribution Center has plenty of space for full-time sales and warehouse employees. President Rocky Wirtz explained, “We can have over a hundred people in a sales room, talk to them all, and they feel that they have a home, instead of always being at a hotel and feeling like you're a nomad."

The Wirtz family started work about a year ago on this 50,000 square foot facility. On Friday, locals got the first chance to see the operation inside.

"To walk through the building again today and see everything up and all the AV stuff and people walking around, and offices filled and the truck drivers in the back, it's exciting to see it finally come to fruition," said Executive Vice President Julian Burzynski,

While this building won't store any beverages long-term, it'll serve as a distribution center for its Cicero warehouse. With more than 62-thousand deliveries expected each year, the company hopes to make lexington home.

"We're going to be in this community for a long, long time," said Burzynski.

Writz Beverage is expected to distribute nearly 1.4 million cases each year and employ between 180 and 200 people in sales and operations. It is hoping to move to the forefront of the beverage distribution industry by July of 2015. Nationally, the company has more than 2,500 employees and generates nearly $2 billion in annual sales.
