PEORIA - WMBD-TV has been honored by the Radio Television Digital News Association with the prestigious 2014 National Edward R. Murrow Award in the Breaking News category for coverage of the November 2013 tornado.

IRVING, Texas and PEORIA, Illinois (June 11, 2014) – Nexstar Broadcasting Group, Inc. (Nasdaq: NXST) announced today that the local news operationof WMBD-TV, the Company’s CBS affiliate serving Peoria/Bloomington and Central Illinois DMA, is the winner of a National Edward R. Murrow Award for Best Breaking News Coverage (Small Market). The award recognizes WMBD 31 News for its exceptional local news coverage of the devastating EF-4 tornado that ripped through Central Illinois in November 2013 as well as the tremendous public service and life-saving information that the station’s local reporters and meteorologists provided local communities throughout Central Illinois.

The Radio Television Digital News Association’s (RTDNA) has been honoring outstanding achievements in electronic journalism with the Edward R. Murrow Awards since 1971. In total, there are 99 National Murrow Award winners from 59 different news stations, television networks, and/or broadcast groups. Only 13 National Edward R. Murrow Awards are given to small market television stations and 2014 awards mark the second straight year a Nexstar station has captured a national award.

Earlier this year, 7 different Nexstar stations won a total 9 Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards for their excellence in local journalism.

In acknowledgement of outstanding journalistic contributions, and broadcasting excellence Nexstar and Mission Broadcasting, Inc. stations have garnered more than 340 awards over the past five years including 161 state broadcast association awards, 64 local and other broadcasting awards, 42 state Associated Press awards, 2 National Edward R. Murrow Awards, 33 regional Edward R. Murrow Awards, 16 State Society of Professional Journalists Awards and 15 Emmy Awards.
