Young Athlete Works Toward Olympic Dream

Meet Lexi Barnes
PEORIA – For a lot of serious athletes, training starts at a young age, and one Central Illinois girl started skating at the age of three.
Now, 12-year-old Lexi Barney wants to go for gold.
“I’m very serious about the sport,” she said at one of her practices. “It's one of my dreams. I remember like, watching the Olympics as a kid and I really wanted to be like them.

Barney's coach, Jenni Flores said it's going to take a lot of hard work.

“A typical day in the life of Lexi is, she gets to the rink a half hour early to stretch and do her air turns,” she said.

The two hour practice begins.

“Working on her flexibility on ice, fast spins to feed into her jumps to increase the height and distance on them,” Flores said.

And the training doesn’t stop when she leaves the rink.

“I go to a dance coach to help with my off-ice gracefulness and then I go to a trainer where she can help me get stronger.”

Doing whatever it takes to make the cut.
