Young Chefs Battle it Out

PEORIA - Six District 150 5th graders competed against one another in the Sodexo Future Chefs Challenge.
PEORIA - Lately, there's been a national push for kids to stay healthy and get fit.

On Saturday, some District 150 students learned- easy cooking can still mean healthy eating.

This was the second year the district took on the Sodexo Future Chefs Challenge.

Six fifth graders prepared and presented sandwiches.

They were then judged on originality, kid-friendliness, taste, and presentation.

The goal was to teach the kids that eating well is as easy as throwing a sandwich together.

"When kids come here from school, they're jumping in the cabinets and grabbing chips, grabbing whatever they can get a hold of.," said Chef Mark Shoopman. "This is something they can very easily put together. It's good for them. You make sure the ingredients are on hand, because kids will gravitate what's easy to get to."

The winning student will go on to a regional competition.

The top three will join us next Friday on WMBD's Living Well.
