Defending Champion Irish Looking for Scoring

Defending state soccer champs not worried if they don't have early firepower

WMBD/WYZZ-TV - PEORIA, Ill. - How do you replace massive firepower?

For Peoria Notre Dame, it might be with a stout defense. The defending state soccer champs lost their top four goal scorers, Drew Whalen, Alex Garcia, Grant Inskeep and Ben Fiddes, to graduation in May.

But the Irish are very excited about what they return defensively.

"They'll be lower scoring games," senior defender Tommy Frampton said. "Not as many blowouts as last  year."

Anchoring the ND defense is goal keeper Justin Buck, one of five returning starters from the 2012 state champs. Senior JJ Slomba is Notre Dame's returning scoring leader (seven goals).

"We're going to have to step up. A lot of younger guys, with less experience, are going to have to put some ballis into the net," said Slomba.

ND opens the season Aug. 28 at Normal Community H.S.

"I think you might see us not be with a wide spread goal differential," said head coach Mike Bare. "But who knows?
