District 87 To Add New Position to Train Principals

BLOOMINGTON - A long-time principal could soon have a new position for District 87.
BLOOMINGTON - A long-time principal could soon have a new position for District 87.

Superintendent Dr. Barry Reilly recommended to the school board that Dr. Mary Kay Scharf becomes the new director of principal leadership.

The newly created position will help train teachers that want to become principals. The recommendation comes on the heels of a five year grant project with Illinois State University.

Reilly says he hates to lose Scharf from Oakland Elementary, but says she's a perfect fit for the new role.

"The good news is that she'll still be in the district, she's still going to have a reaching impact, and I'm hoping that's a farther reaching impact for all our schools, and when I weigh those things on a scale, I think the benefits outweigh the cons," said Reilly.

The new program is slated to begin in the fall of 2015. Intern principals will come from within District 87 as well as outside of it.
