'Dress for Success' Takes New Meaning at NCHS

NORMAL - Junior Mikal Joppy suggested that his classmates dress up, and the idea spread to social media: #formal finals.
NORMAL - You've probably heard the phrase dress for success, and students at a local high school are showing up for class in style.

You're probably used to seeing students dressed up comfortably for finals, wearing things like sweatshirts to relax. But Normal Community has a new method, taking finals a little more formally.

Karl Goeke issued a challenge to his Spanish class.

"This is the one time in their academic careers for the semester, where they really have a chance to to show everything they've learned. So, I wanted them to take it seriously," said Goeke.

In the past, Goeke says students were coming to class, dressed like they were ready for bed, not ready to go to work.

"Mr. Goeke said I don't want you bringing sweatpants or pillows like all the older kids do," said Griffin Kovster, a freshman.

So, Junior Mikal Joppy suggested that his classmates dress up, and the idea spread to social media: #formal finals.

"The new look is giving some a new attitude before the tests.

"Having formal finals instills a confidence into people, and I think it'll help them do better when they take their tests," said Nathaniel Jones, a freshman.

"Now, the students that participated are hoping to make this more than a one-time thing. They're hoping it's a tradition.

In Goeke's class, students were given a small amount of extra credit for dressing up.
